Pelaksanaan konstruksi diatas tanah lunak menimbulkan beberapa masalah, yaitu tanah lunak memiliki daya dukung yang lemah dan memiliki tingkat kompresibilitas yang tinggi yang mengakibatkan penurunan yang besar, baik penurunan total maupun penurunan differensial. Kayu galam (melaleuca cajupati), material yang banyak digunakan sebagai bahan pendukung pelaksanaan konstruksi struktur, banyak digunakan di Kalimantan dan Sumatera. Sisa kayu galam tentu menjadi alternatif ekonomis yang digunakan sebagai bahan pondasi untuk mengatasi permasalahan daya dukung serta penurunan pada tanah lunak.  Studi parameter kayu galam dan tanah lunak dilakukan di Laboratorium untuk mengetahui sifat teknis kayu galam dan tanah lunak. Hasil parameter kayu galam dan tanah lunak, digunakan pada analisis pengaruh penggunaan tiang kayu galam pada tanah lunak.  Analisis menggunakan metode elemen hingga, program PLAXIS. Hasil menunjukkan bahwa penggunaan tiang kayu galam meningkatkan daya dukung dan mengurangi penurunan secara signifikan.

Construction on soft soil raises several issues. The low bearing capacity, high compressibility and the low permeability of the soft clay caused the problems both design and construction. Galam wood (melaleuca cajupati), as material which is usually used for construction support or formwork, is widely used in Kalimantan and Sumatera. Galam wood waste would be an economical alternative material for supporting a foundation for resolving the problems and a decrease in the carrying capacity on soft soil. Study parameters Galam wood and soft soil sample is carried out in laboratory to determine the engineering properties of wood Galam and soft soil sample. The results of Galam wood and soft soil parameters are used in the analysis of the effect of galam wood pile on soft soil. Analysis using finite element method, program PLAXIS. The results showed that the use of Galam wood pile increase the bearing capacity and decrease the settlement significantly.
